Shear Snowflake Holiday Card

The Cricket Company specializes in high-quality hair styling products, and they’re very well known for their haircutting shears. Because of that, I used haircutting shears as the design inspiration for this holiday greeting card.

Publication Design

I’ve had the opportunity to design for several publications. Although the publications were similar in some ways, they each posed their own challenges.

Natural Pages

The Natural Pages was a community-minded publication dedicated to personal, community and planetary health. The company published eight books twice a year in New York, the San Francisco Bay Area, New Jersey, Connecticut and Long Island. Contents included: articles, a natural food restaurant guide, a calendar of events and a resource directory for natural living.

The Colors of Autumn

Autumn Fall Colorful Leaves
People complain about the rain, but if I had to pick a favorite season it would be autumn. I love the smells, the billowing clouds, the cool air and especially the colors. The explosion of reds, oranges, yellows and greens is breathtaking, and I feel like I want to photograph every tree I see! I don’t photograph every tree I see, but I did photograph some leaves I collected while chasing my kids around out front today.

Cricket Company Halloween Pumpkin Contest 2012

Pumpkin Carving - Lurking Inside
Last year at work we didn’t get around to having a pumpkin carving contest for Halloween. But this year we finally got organized and had some great entries! Mine is above, inspired by a few similar carvings I found while searching through Google. I have never tried this type of pumpkin carving before, so I had fun figuring everything out in the process. Following are several of the many great pumpkins my co-workers brought in today.

Handmade Lord of the Rings Wooden Toy Figures

Handmade Wooden Gandalf and Bilbo Toy Figures in Forest
“The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.”

–Bilbo Baggins, The Fellowship of the Ring, Book I, Chapter 1

Handmade Wooden Space Toys

Wooden Space Figures Group
As a kid I can remember making wooden boats to race down the stream behind our house and wooden swords to fend off trolls in the forest, but that has been the extent of my experience creating wooden toys until recently. After having kids (two boys) and being overwhelmed by the explosion of plastic toys everywhere, I decided to create my own, more classic wooden figures for them to play with.

Handmade Wooden Gnome Toy Figures

3 Wooden Gnomes
When I came across Resurrection Fern’s post on whittling wooden gnomes from found sticks, I loved the idea so much I had to try it myself! Resurrection Fern outlines the process in her post, so I won’t go into detail here. I found the stick I used while walking one day and whittled the four gnomes pictured as well as some others that have been given away. One thing I chose to do differently was to wood burn the faces for more permanence. I used non-toxic water color paints for the hats.

Cricket Signage at the San Jose
Spring Style Show 2012

Cricket Show Signage at Spring Style Show
As the Cricket Company’s creative director I recently had the opportunity to redesign some of our trade show signage. The new modular panels were displayed this weekend at Cosmoprof’s Spring Style Show in San Jose, one of the biggest shows in the business featuring Paul Mitchell, Joico, Aquage, Farouk Systems, OPI, American Crew and others.

Chico State — 40 Years of Graphic Design, Illustration & Photography

Chico State 40 Years Poster

This year marks the 40th anniversary of graphic design at Chico State. Having graduated from Chico State’s design program I’m happy to be able to return to my former school for the alumni reunion this October. I was even excited to have a homework assignment again! From the Chico Design Reunion site:

Of course, it wouldn’t be school without homework – we’d like you to send samples of your best work to be included in an alumni show and archive. Also, we’re inviting alumni to design a poster commemorating the 40th anniversary.

Pictured above is the poster I designed for the anniversary. I chose to use a bold typographical approach using the copy provided by the school along with a minimalistic illustration of Kendall Hall, the iconic administration building easily recognized by the many repeating arcs in the architecture.
