Shear Snowflake Holiday Card

The Cricket Company specializes in high-quality hair styling products, and they’re very well known for their haircutting shears. Because of that, I used haircutting shears as the design inspiration for this holiday greeting card.

Publication Design

I’ve had the opportunity to design for several publications. Although the publications were similar in some ways, they each posed their own challenges. Natural Pages The Natural Pages was a community-minded publication dedicated to personal, community and planetary health. The company published eight books twice a year in New York, the San Francisco Bay Area, [...]

The Colors of Autumn

People complain about the rain, but if I had to pick a favorite season it would be autumn. I love the smells, the billowing clouds, the cool air and especially the colors. The explosion of reds, oranges, yellows and greens is breathtaking, and I feel like I want to photograph every tree I see! I [...]

Handmade Lord of the Rings Wooden Toy Figures

I first read The Hobbit when I was in the 5th grade after receiving it as a gift from my parents. I loved this book and immediately began reading The Lord of the Rings afterward. At that age some of The Lord of the Rings went a little over my head, and it took me a while to get through, but I trudged on anyway captivated by the setting, the characters and their adventures. It all seemed so real and fantastic! I longed to be IN that world, to walk down that road from Hobbiton on an adventure of my own. Even now I find it difficult not to think of Middle Earth while hiking through the woods and exploring any trail I might find myself on. Although I’ve read many fantasy and science fiction books since, I always come back to Tolkien’s works as my favorites.

Naturally, now that I have kids of my own I want to share this world with them. I began telling my two sons stories from the books (my 4-year-old especially enjoyed hearing about Moria and the Balrog), but I also wanted to give them something to play with. I chose to make wooden figures of two of my favorite, and most well known characters, Mr. Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf the Grey.

Handmade Wooden Space Toys

As a kid I can remember making wooden boats to race down the stream behind our house and wooden swords to fend off trolls in the forest, but that has been the extent of my experience creating wooden toys until recently. After having kids (two boys) and being overwhelmed by the explosion of plastic toys everywhere, I decided to create my own, more classic wooden figures for them to play with.

Handmade Wooden Gnome Toy Figures

When I came across Resurrection Fern’s post on whittling wooden gnomes from found sticks, I loved the idea so much I had to try it myself!

Cricket Signage at the San Jose
Spring Style Show 2012

As the Cricket Company’s creative director I recently had the opportunity to redesign some of our trade show signage. The new modular panels were displayed this weekend at Cosmoprof’s Spring Style Show in San Jose, one of the biggest shows in the business featuring Paul Mitchell, Joico, Aquage, Farouk Systems, OPI, American Crew and others.

Happy Halloween! I created the above image for anyone to print and color with their favorite crayons, pens or anything else. The image was first sketched in pencil and then brought into Illustrator to create crisp lines using vector paths.

Nature Photography

I lay on my back, tall grass reaching toward the sky all around me. I stare up at fluffy clouds drifting along in a sea of blue. Closing my eyes I hear leaves rustling in the wind and the familiar sound of birds singing in the distance. The smell of eucalyptus reminds me of the long line of immense trees standing like giants along the edge of the field at the end of the street where I lay…
