This book cover was designed for Slapshtik, a company who’s mission is to use humor to promote and expand Jewish culture, tradition and heritage. The book tells the story of a young Jewish boy who tries to catch a gefilte fish.
The image above is a mockup created in Photoshop. To make this image I first created an ink illustration, scanned it and imported it into Photoshop. From there I set the blending mode on the line art layer to multiply and created a new layer below it. On that new layer I used the brush tool set to pressure sensitivity along with a Wacom graphics tablet to add color to the image. I then brought the image into Illustrator to create the text. Next I photographed one of my son’s books, brought the photo into photoshop and used the clone tool to remove all images and text from the photo. I was then left with a blank book containing nice highlights and shadows. I imported the book cover design which I had completed in Illustrator into Photoshop and set the cover design layer blending mode to multiply. Next I used the skew command to fit the design onto the photo of the book. After that all that was left to do was clean up the edges using a layer mask.
