Publication Design

I’ve had the opportunity to design for several publications. Although the publications were similar in some ways, they each posed their own challenges.

Natural Pages

The Natural Pages was a community-minded publication dedicated to personal, community and planetary health. The company published eight books twice a year in New York, the San Francisco Bay Area, New Jersey, Connecticut and Long Island. Contents included: articles, a natural food restaurant guide, a calendar of events and a resource directory for natural living.

I began working for the Natural Pages as an ad designer. Over the course of five years I took on many responsibilities which include: book layout and design, creating and maintaining brand identity, design of marketing collateral, ad design, cover and inside art illustration, in-house forms, making corrections during production of the books, technical problem solving, creating email lists and marketing emails using Streamsend, organizing and keeping track of all design files and communicating with clients, sales reps, printers and other designers. Additionally I redesigned the publications to stay current with design trends and improve readability, and efficiently used space to lower printing costs. I also redesigned the Natural Pages brand identity giving a consistent look to marketing materials and improving brand recognition. By the end of my time with the Natural Pages I was the head designer in charge of all graphic design and production of the Natural Pages books.

During my time at the Natural Pages I designed many articles written about a wide range of subjects. My process for designing articles is always to first read the whole article through. As I read I look for any ideas that grab me and have the potential to be visually compelling. Keeping those ideas in mind, when I finish the article, I then attempt to convey the core message through image and type selection. This is accomplished through varying font and image size, leading, and type styles. Finally I look carefully for widows and orphans or any other details that need to be fixed and make those corrections. The resulting article is one which draws the reader in through relevant imagery, easy to read text and a logical order to the information presented.

Stone Soup — A Journal of the San Geronimo Valley Community Center

Stone Soup is a quarterly newspaper created by the San Geronimo Valley Community Center. On several occasions I was responsible for the entire design and production of the newspaper which included all layout, image creation and formatting, ad design, corrections and creating press-optimized PDFs for the printer.

Nurturers’ News: Monthly Newsletter of the Petaluma Mothers’ Club

My wife joined the Petaluma Mothers’ Club when we had our first son. Through the organization we have made many friends and have had the opportunity to take part in all the wonderful activities the organization offers. My wife wanted to give back and became the co-editor of the Mothers’ Club Newsletter, Nurturers’ News. I have helped out myself by volunteering to design the newsletter on several occasions.

This job was a challenge considering the organization was previously using Publisher to layout the newsletter, had recently switched to InDesign and the basic structure and design was not very organized. I devised a three and four column grid system to more easily layout the publication and provide better readability, standardized the font hierarchy and used free stock photography to bring visual interest to articles.
